A Sprinkle of History

Originally named Spudnuts (a reference to the main ingredient in the donuts– potato flour), Carol Lee Donuts has been serving the Blacksburg community for 55 years. Its founder, Norman Kidd, intially began preparation for the opening of Carol Lee's in 68', and the store opened the following year in 69'. The store started right off of College Avenue next to the renowned Lyric Theater. Here, Virginia Tech students could drop by for a warm eight-cent donut every morning. “It was the only place to eat in town besides Hardee’s,” says Melinda Strager, co-owner of Carol Lee. “We had lines out the door for hours.” As Blacksburg grew, so did Carol Lee. In 2000, after the downtown parking situation escalated and the rent rose, Carol Lee moved to its current location on North Main.
